Impeachment Motion Rejected, Macron May Appoint New Prime Minister Within 48 Hours

French caretaker Prime Minister Le Cornu said in a media interview on the evening of the 8th that the possibility of President Macron dissolving the National Assembly is decreasing and that Macron may appoint a new prime minister within 48 hours.

Le Cornu said the current situation allows Macron to appoint a new prime minister within the next 48 hours.

However, he refused to answer whether the new prime minister would come from the left-wing bloc or whether the post would be assumed by an independent technocrat.

Le Cornu announced that he will submit the draft budget for 2026 to the cabinet meeting on the 13th so that the draft can enter the National Assembly's review process as soon as possible.

He believes that all political forces in France are "willing" to pass the draft before December 31, which also reduces the likelihood of Macron dissolving the National Assembly.

Entrusted by Macron, Le Cornu has launched two days of "final negotiations" with opposition parties in an effort to maintain political stability. On the evening of the 8th, Le Cornu briefed Macron on the negotiations.

Le Cornu was also interviewed by France 2 TV that night, saying that "it is possible to find a way out" through negotiations with opposition parties.

He stated that although the opposition parties have put forward various conditions, they all want political stability.

Meanwhile, an impeachment motion against Macron proposed by some members of the National Assembly was rejected on the same day.

The impeachment motion against Macron, proposed by some members, was ruled "inadmissible" and rejected by the Bureau of the National Assembly. Among the members of the Bureau, 10 voted against the motion, 5 voted in favor, and 5 abstained. On the 6th, after Le Cornu suddenly announced his resignation, the France Unbowed party called for the impeachment motion, which was jointly submitted by 104 members.

French media pointed out that according to the constitution, it is "almost impossible" to successfully impeach the president at the parliamentary level. Even if the impeachment motion passes the first hurdle of the Bureau of the National Assembly, it would also require a two-thirds majority in both the National Assembly and the Senate, and would finally have to be submitted to the High Court.
