Welcome the Addition of City Council Members Lin Si Jian Urges New Blood to Bring Real Reform

(Miri, 31st) Following the recent decision by the Sarawak Assembly to add city council seats, the Miri City Council is set to undergo a new round of member adjustments. In response, Lin Si Jian, Secretary of Sarawak Hope Alliance and Democratic Action Party lawyer, expressed his welcome and hopes that this personnel expansion is not just a quantitative increase but can lead to a qualitative enhancement, injecting a real opportunity for reform into the Miri Municipal Administration.

Lin Si Jian bluntly stated that the Miri City Council has long been unsatisfactory in addressing the people's livelihood issues, especially in dealing with citizens’ complaints and feedback, where there is a phenomenon of “selective response.”

“We must acknowledge that feedback from the ruling faction often receives quick attention and resolution, while public issues conveyed by opposition party members are often shelved or completely ignored.”

He emphasized that the addition of seats should not become an extension and amplifier of existing practices, but should serve as a turning point to correct biases and improve governance.

“What citizens are most worried about is superficial reform, which in fact is stagnation or ‘a change in form rather than substance’. We hope to see an improvement in work efficiency and service attitude, rather than a continued replication of a culture of negligence.”

Lin Si Jian called on the newly appointed city council members to uphold the principle of 'serving the people, regardless of stance', actively responding to the needs of citizens from all walks of life, regardless of their political background or stance.

“The city council is a service organization for all citizens, not a subsidiary of any political camp.”

He pointed out that if this increase in members can effectively strengthen the supervision mechanism, improve administrative efficiency, and handle complaints impartially, it will help promote the city council towards a more democratic, transparent, and responsible direction.

“We welcome change and will continue to monitor whether change truly takes root. The citizens of Miri have long not felt a proactive, fair, and transparent city council. Now, it is time for them to see that the democratic representative mechanism is not just a slogan, but a force that can truly improve life.”

Lin Si Jian lastly emphasized that the Sarawak Democratic Action Party will continue to pay attention to the development of the city council and actively reflect the voices of the grassroots through elected representatives within the party, ensuring that the city council fulfills its duties and truly becomes the guardian of the people's welfare.
