June 24 marks the 57th birthday of Taiwanese musician Yuan Weiren. In 2018, he suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and fell into a coma in Shanghai. He then returned to his hometown in Taitung to recuperate. In 2020, he fell at home and was admitted to the intensive care unit. He remains in a vegetative state today. His elder sister recently posted on Facebook, sharing her concerns about her troubled younger brother.
On the 24th, Yuan Weiren’s eldest sister, Yuan Ailing, wrote a post listing five “Why can’t you just…” questions: “Why can’t you just study well and do well in school like everyone else, but instead ignore your grades and choose to befriend loyal friends who will love you for a lifetime?” “Why can’t you just get a job and work like everyone else, but instead pick up a guitar and build a lifetime of performing experience that will always benefit you?” “Why can’t you just fall in love and start a family like everyone else, but instead believe in duty and end up enduring a result of being deceived that will never fade away?” “Why can’t you just live a simple and ordinary life like everyone else, but instead write lyrics and compose music, choosing to persist in a lifelong commitment to honest creation?” The last line emphatically states, “Because you are different.”
Last year, Chi Pao-ju, secretary-general of the 'Taiwan Association for Quality Life,' mentioned that she visited Yuan Weiren in 2023: “He is still not very conscious. The first few years when I saw him, his condition was okay, but after the second fall, he could hardly recognize anyone. I really think his sister is remarkable—she’s always by his side, taking care of him.”
