(Bandar Seri Begawan, 9th) Chinese Ambassador to Brunei, Chen Shaochun, expressed his delight at being invited to attend the 2026 Fuzhou Shiyi Association’s Elderly Respect and Lunar New Year Gathering, joining fellow Fuzhou people for a joyful reunion. As the saying goes, the New Year lasts as long as the first lunar month has not ended.
On this occasion, the Ambassador, on behalf of the Chinese Embassy in Brunei, extends sincere New Year’s greetings to all friends present!
The Ambassador noted that the unity, mutual assistance, shared roots, and heartfelt connection to their homeland among the Fuzhou community in Brunei is something he has long heard about. Over the years, Fuzhou Chinese in Brunei have worked hard and flourished, making outstanding contributions to the local economic and social development while actively carrying on and promoting excellent traditional Chinese culture.
President Xi Jinping has pointed out: “Since ancient times, Chinese people have advocated filial piety toward the elderly, loving one’s relatives, respecting not only our own elderly but also others’, and taking care of not just our own young but also others’.” Today’s Elderly Respect and Lunar New Year Gathering is a vivid practice of this traditional virtue.

Ambassador Chen Shaochun made these remarks last night at the 2026 Fuzhou Shiyi Association’s Elderly Respect and Lunar New Year Gathering held at the association’s premises.
The Ambassador stated that the past year, 2025, was an extraordinary year for China-Brunei relations. This year, His Majesty the Sultan paid a successful state visit to China, and President Xi Jinping and the Sultan reached an important consensus on jointly building a China-Brunei community with a shared future, opening a new chapter in bilateral relations.
2026 is the first year of China’s 15th Five-Year Plan and marks the 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Brunei. We are willing to work hand in hand with all sectors of Brunei society, uphold the strategic guidance of our heads of state, tap deeper into the potential of mutually beneficial cooperation, accelerate two-way cultural exchanges, continue to increase mutual understanding and friendship between the peoples of our two countries, and make greater progress in building a China-Brunei community with a shared future!

The Ambassador stated that the construction of a China-Brunei community with a shared future cannot succeed without the participation and support of the Chinese community in Brunei. Over the past year, we have seen the presence of Brunei Chinese—especially those from Fuzhou—in many China-Brunei exchange and cooperation events. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to all Fuzhou compatriots for their long-term care and support for the development of their ancestral country and their participation in promoting China-Brunei relations! I hope all friends will continue to uphold the spirit of hardworking perseverance and courage to venture and innovate, as always, care for and support the development and construction of the motherland, and further contribute to the economic and social development of Brunei and the cause of China-Brunei friendship.
Lastly, the Ambassador wished all the elderly good health and longevity! Wishing all friends happiness for the whole family and great success in the new year!
