Sim Kui Hian: Sarawak Cancer Hospital to Embrace Smart Era, Fully Operational by 2030

(Kuching, 12th) The Sarawak Cancer Hospital, expected to be completed by 2030, will adopt a "future-oriented" design concept, integrating smart design approaches to keep pace with the era of artificial intelligence and the development of future medical technologies.
Deputy Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Amar Dr. Sim Kui Hian, stated that the planning of this new hospital is not only to increase treatment facilities, but will also mark a transformation of Sarawak's healthcare system to address the challenges posed by chronic diseases, including the rising incidences of liver and pancreatic cancer.
He said during his speech at the 2025 Borneo Liver, Pancreatic and Biliary System Cancer Symposium held today that we are in the age of artificial intelligence.
"Not considering the role of new technologies when planning the hospital means we are not preparing for the future. We hope this hospital will not only be modernised, but can also respond to the technological revolution currently underway."
At the same time, he also expressed his gratitude to Sarawak General Hospital and the interdisciplinary expert team.
"Since 2021, when the country was still coping with the COVID-19 pandemic, this team had already started comprehensive treatment work on liver cancer."
He said this initiative reflects the high dedication and strong commitment of local experts. Even when facing limited manpower and financial resources, they continued to provide services.
"The team holds meetings twice monthly to discuss the increasing number of liver cancer cases. Some cases are triggered by hepatitis infections and obesity. If the public can take early preventive measures such as vaccination and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, both of these factors can be avoided."
Speaking about cooperation with the federal government, Datuk Amar Dr. Sim Kui Hian expressed Sarawak’s gratitude to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar for his support in accelerating the construction of the Sarawak Cancer Hospital.
However, he stressed that the implementation of the project urgently requires the relevant agencies in Kuala Lumpur to truly speed up the construction.
"We do not wish to be stuck in the debate of whether Sarawak or Kuala Lumpur is responsible for construction. What matters most now is to accelerate the implementation of the project for the benefit of the people."
This three-day symposium brings together oncology and hepatopancreatobiliary surgery experts from within and outside Malaysia, aiming to share professional knowledge, conduct training, and strengthen the regional cancer research network.
