Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan emphasized that our country only played the role of coordinator in the ceasefire agreement between Thailand and Cambodia, and never intervened in the border conflict between the two countries.
He said the issue at the Thailand-Cambodia border has existed for decades, and that it is an issue between those two countries and has nothing to do with us.
However, he stated that during the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting, he met separately with the foreign ministers of both countries, and conveyed to them that if the two countries were willing to sit down and negotiate, it would be beneficial to ASEAN.
He said that subsequently it was Thailand and Cambodia who requested that our country act as coordinator and provide a venue for their negotiations.
"Their talks went on until 3 a.m.; we witnessed the process and listened at the side, but never intervened."
Mohamad Hasan said this today during the Ministerial Question Time at the Dewan Rakyat, in response to an additional question from Bersatu's Kubang Pasu MP Datuk Ku Abd Rahman.
He said the accusations about our Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar intervening in the Thai-Cambodian border conflict were likely created by a small opposition faction in Thailand as an election issue ahead of the upcoming general election, urging our own opposition party not to go along with it.
