Australia and Brunei Explore Heritage Tourism – Leveraging Shared Historical Resources

(Bandar Seri Begawan, 18th) — The Australian High Commission in Brunei, in collaboration with the Brunei Tourism Development Department under the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, invited military historian Professor Garth Pratten to hold a special seminar to explore the potential for heritage tourism development in Brunei.

This seminar brought together local travel agency operators and licensed tour guides to jointly discuss how to leverage the profound historical ties between Australia and Brunei, and develop heritage tourism products tailored for the Australian market with educational and cultural value.

This month marks the 81st anniversary of "Operation Oboe". During World War II, Australian forces, supported by the US Navy and Air Force, launched amphibious landings that successfully liberated Brunei and Labuan. The Borneo Landings not only represented the last major military action of Australia in WWII, but were also among the largest amphibious operations in its history.

On April 14 this year, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese visited the Brunei-Australia Memorial. Accompanied by Brunei’s Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Second Minister of Defence, Pehin Dato Halbi, he paid tribute to the shared history of the two countries and highlighted the significance of their historical ties.

During the seminar, Professor Pratten pointed out that the shared history of the two countries is rich with tourism development potential. Through storytelling, history education, and cultural exchanges, it is possible to create more attractive and in-depth heritage tourism experiences, further enhancing mutual understanding between the peoples of Australia and Brunei.

This event also reflects Australia’s support for Brunei in promoting economic diversification under the "Vision 2035" framework, particularly its long-term commitment to the tourism sector, and its dedication to promoting sustainable tourism cooperation and development based on respecting and carrying forward their shared history.
