Recently, during a leaked conversation between Pheu Thai and former Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, she referred to the 2nd Army Area Commander, Lieutenant General Bunsing, as an 'opponent', shocking the Thai public. On the afternoon of the 20th, Pheu Thai traveled to northeastern Ubon Ratchathani Province to meet with this border commander in order to repair any possible misunderstandings and consequences.
According to AFP, after the meeting, Pheu Thai stated that the matter had been resolved, telling reporters: 'Everything went smoothly. I have already spoken with the commander, and there are no problems now.'
As for Bunsing, he told the media that 'everything is normal.'
The Thai armed forces have long played a powerful role in domestic politics, and political figures usually act cautiously to avoid provoking them.
In addition, prior to the meeting, Bunsing said in an interview with Thai media Standard that he advised Prime Minister Pheu Thai to 'remain cautious' when handling border disputes with Cambodia and to safeguard national interests.
He also suggested that the Prime Minister form a team of experienced advisors to assist her in restoring the international community’s confidence in Thailand.
'I hope the Prime Minister can demonstrate determination and resolve problems prudently.'
Bunsing stated that he is always ready to obey any policies from his superiors, 'as long as they are ethical and entirely benefit the country.'
This commander, who is in charge of the northeastern region, is responsible for nearly the entire land border between Thailand and Cambodia. The government has authorized him to have full oversight over all checkpoints bordering neighboring countries.
Regarding the leaked recording incident, Bunsing said: 'The Prime Minister called to apologize to me immediately afterward.'
Bunsing reiterated his loyalty to his superiors, from the armed forces commander to the defense minister to the prime minister.
Bunsing said: 'I hope the Prime Minister can clarify this matter to the public... There’s no need to worry about me.'
