Jet Li’s Beloved Daughter Appears and Candidly Talks About Depression – He Blames Himself for Not Taking Care of His Child: 'I Was Very Negligent'

Martial arts superstar Jet Li appeared yesterday with his younger daughter Jada at the Jing Si Books & Cafe’s spiritual seminar to share his mental journey. Speaking about his daughter’s struggles with psychological issues from age 7 to 13, Jet Li admitted that, from childhood to adulthood, everyone always shielded and accommodated him, but his daughter became his best teacher, growing and learning together with him.

Accompanying His Daughter Through Depression

Recalling when his daughter would come home from school and shut herself in her room, completely uncommunicative, Jet Li sighed: “I was very negligent—doing charity work outside but unable to look after my own child at home. Even Buddhism didn’t help; in the end, I tried a different way: I will walk this journey with you. I wouldn’t tell her what she should do. Whatever she chose to do, I would do with her. She taught me to learn how to listen.”

Jet Li believes, “I am not qualified to teach her anything—only to accompany her to relearn, to walk the path again together. In the process, I’ve found that self-cultivation has been incredibly helpful.” He also mentioned that this experience made him let go of the last bit of arrogance he had as a father who thought, just because you bring life into the world and lead your child, you take it for granted you are their guide.

Jada said: “These past years he hasn’t just been my dad—he’s been a teacher and a very good friend. I’ve learned so much from him, and being able to help him makes me especially happy. I’m really glad you all want to hear the things he tells me every day.” Jet Li also mentioned that it’s very difficult to use his own language to share Buddhist teachings with kids born after 2000, so he hopes his daughter can share what she’s learned, using her own words, with her peers.
