In 2008, Edison Chen was embroiled in the 'photo scandal' incident, with 1,400 private photos leaked. The scandal not only impacted the public image and careers of female celebrities like Cecilia Cheung and Gillian Chung, but also led to Edison Chen's indefinite exit from the entertainment industry. While the public initially thought it was the result of his computer being sent for repair and the photos being leaked by a technician, renowned Hong Kong director Wong Jing analyzed that it could be related to Edison Chen 'showing off.'
Wong Jing previously released a video discussing Edison Chen’s ‘photo scandal’ incident. He questioned why the technician would know there were these photos on his computer in the first place, as finding them would actually require significant effort. Thus, Wong Jing speculated that Edison Chen, during a gathering after drinking, may have shown off to friends about having many girlfriends, or about how his girlfriend was very impressive, and might have even shown the photos to his friends. In the scenario of 'word spreading from person to person,' the information might have reached the repair technician, so when Edison Chen brought his computer in for repair, the technician knew exactly what to look for and uploaded the photos.
Wong Jing had previously worked with Edison Chen on three films and one TV drama. From a director’s standpoint, Wong Jing considered Edison Chen to be well-behaved, very polite, and never late or leaving early for work. So when he first heard about the 'photo scandal' incident, he couldn’t believe it—he initially thought the photos were AI-generated. It was only after actually seeing the photos that he realized they were real, which left him devastated.
