(Amman, 20th) Jordanian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Safadi, the Syrian regime’s head of foreign affairs Shibani, and US Ambassador to Turkey and Special Envoy for Syria Barrak held a trilateral meeting in Jordan’s capital Amman on Saturday (July 19), engaging in consultations on the current situation in Syria.
According to Xinhua News Agency, citing a statement released by the Jordanian Foreign Ministry, the three parties reached consensus on concrete measures to implement the Syrian ceasefire agreement. These include: deploying Syrian government security forces in southern Suwayda province; releasing detainees held by all sides in the conflict; promoting social reconciliation in the Suwayda region; advancing the domestic peace process; and expanding the scope of humanitarian aid.
Safadi and Barrak welcomed the Syrian regime’s commitment to hold perpetrators of attacks on civilians accountable, and supported its efforts to combat violence, sectarianism, and hate speech. The two emphasized that Jordan and the United States firmly support Syria’s security, stability, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, and called on the Syrian regime to advance the rule of law and ensure citizens’ safety.
Since last Sunday (13th), intense clashes have erupted in Syria’s Suwayda province between Druze armed factions and Bedouin tribes. As tensions escalated, both the Syrian regime and Israel intervened. On Saturday (19th), the Syrian government announced a comprehensive, immediate ceasefire in all of Suwayda, and launched a security forces deployment operation.
