(Bandar Seri Begawan, 24th) Pan Yanqin, Director of the Brunei Research Institute at Guangxi University for Nationalities, along with research assistant Liang Sichang and the institute’s advisor Shen Renxiang, traced the history of Brunei’s first privately founded cultural foundation centering around Chinese heritage—the Hua He Cultural Foundation.
Within local Bruneian historical materials treasured by advisor Shen Renxiang, the founding history of the Hua He Cultural Foundation has drawn the attention of the researchers. Many first-hand materials are well worth in-depth reading and analysis. Due to limited time, a more thorough exploratory study is planned for the next research visit to Brunei.
The Hua He Cultural Foundation was established in 2000 by the late Pehin Kapitan Dato Paduka Lau Gim Kok, with the aim of preserving and promoting fine traditional culture. Since its founding, the foundation has consistently promoted international calligraphy and painting exhibitions, thematic lectures, cultural book publications, and supported campus literature creation, essay competitions, and Chinese cultural knowledge contests. It has played an indispensable role in the flourishing and vibrancy of local Chinese culture in Brunei.
Additionally, Shen Renxiang also donated various past publications from Bruneian Chinese schools and associations, as well as special editions commemorating past royal greetings, to the Brunei Research Institute of Guangxi University for Nationalities to enrich its historical materials and facilitate further exploration of Brunei by university researchers.
