(Ipoh, 14th) In the case of a man transporting a corpse who was intercepted, robbed a police gun, and assaulted officers, the body of 62-year-old female deceased Foo Swee Thow, which was found in the car, was finally approved by the police to be claimed by her family on Saturday (September 13) afternoon after days of waiting. The body was sent to the Wei Kai Memorial Hall on Qian Street, Ipoh, where the vigil was held, and the funeral and cremation was scheduled for next Tuesday (16th).
Two younger siblings of the deceased woman arrived at the mortuary of Ipoh Sultanah Bainun Hospital at about 3:50pm on Saturday, accompanied by a funeral director. When asked by the media whether they were there to handle the claim procedure, they nodded but did not make any further comments.
During the process of handling the procedures for claiming the body, they appeared sorrowful, and the female relative even shed tears and frequently wiped her tears with tissue. The body was claimed at 4:23pm.
According to the obituary circulated on social media, Foo Swee Thow’s body was placed at the Wei Kai Memorial Hall on Qian Street, Ipoh, where Taoist funeral rites of the Cantonese tradition were performed. The funeral is scheduled for 10am on the 16th of this month, to be sent to Nirvana Memorial Park crematorium for cremation.
Foo Swee Thow’s body had undergone an autopsy on September 7, with the report indicating death by asphyxiation. The family of the deceased woman, accompanied by a funeral director, went to the hospital mortuary the following morning (8th) hoping to claim the body, but were refused by the investigating officer at the time.

It is understood that the police had to follow standard operating procedures, which included waiting for the fingerprint identification report. Only after confirming the identity of the deceased could the family be allowed to claim the body.

Background of the incident:

This case occurred at about 1:15 am on September 7 in Simpang Pulai. While patrolling to prevent crime, police officers from the Simpang Pulai police station pursued a suspicious looking car. After a chase towards an oil palm plantation, officer Asyraf Sukifili tried to arrest the male driver. A struggle ensued, during which the suspect managed to snatch the police firearm, fired two shots into the officer’s abdomen, and stabbed him three times before escaping with the gun into the darkness.
When police subsequently inspected the abandoned SUV left by the suspect, they were shocked to find a female corpse in the back seat. The deceased was confirmed to be Foo Swee Thow. After the incident, police successfully arrested nine male and female suspects with family relations to assist in the investigation.
On the other hand, the nine suspects were granted a seven-day remand extension until the 14th of this month by the Ipoh Magistrate's Court. On Saturday, following instructions from the deputy public prosecutor, they were released on police bail.
According to Ipoh District Police Chief Abang Zainal, all suspects have been released, and the police will wait for further instructions from the deputy public prosecutor. The nine suspects (eight men and one woman) were arrested in succession in Kuala Lumpur and Ipoh on September 7 and 8.
