A video has recently been circulating online showing a man in a hotel room in Macau, China, directly using a hot water kettle to cook hotpot while filming himself and speaking. He appears to be a Mandarin-speaking Chinese man. Netizens blasted him, saying, “Not only is he not embarrassed, he’s showing off.”
According to a report by HK01, a netizen reposted a 17-second video on Threads. In the video, there are two boiling hot water kettles on the room’s table. The man filming says, “Have you ever eaten hotpot cooked in a hot water kettle? There’s all kinds of stuff~” The camera pans across the table, showing a pile of hotpot ingredients: snow peas, cauliflower, baby bok choy, mushrooms, and a pack of beef on the floor. Someone puts the beef into a kettle to cook. There are also four cans of beer beside them. The man adds, “We’re drunks, we eat and drink everything.”
The video triggered a wave of criticism after going public. Some netizens recognized it was in a certain hotel in Macau. Comments included, “Doing something like this and even daring to record and post it online, because they just don’t see anything wrong with it—they even think they’re clever,” and “Who would do this? Wouldn’t it be better to eat hotpot at a restaurant? It’s truly a disgrace, embarrassing us abroad, using an electric kettle as a pot.”
Other netizens blasted, “Honestly speechless, how can people raise such classless individuals who even think they’re smart?”
Some also pointed out that hotel kettles are actually very dirty and shouldn’t be used: “Some people use hotel kettles to boil underwear,” “Hotel kettles are disgustingly dirty—kids boil socks, pee, or even spit in them,” “Some have even pooped in them; my friend works at a hotel and says it really happens often.”
