Indonesia Commits to Rebuilding Disaster-Hit Schools; Over 3,000 Schools in Three Provinces Need Repairs

Indonesian Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian stated that the government is committed to restoring thousands of schools in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra that were damaged by floods and landslides in November 2025.

In a statement on Monday, he pointed out that around 3,700 schools in the three provinces require intervention and repairs, a task that will take some time to complete.

Karnavian, who also heads the Sumatra Post-Disaster Rehabilitation Acceleration Task Force, said these disasters have damaged or destroyed early childhood education centers and schools ranging from elementary to high school levels.

He said: “We are coordinating with local governments to collect and compile the necessary data.”

The authorities have begun assessing the extent of the damage to each school and will carry out the reconstruction work in phases, according to priority.

He noted that schools with mild or moderate damage will continue to accept students for classes during the repair period.

Karnavian emphasized: “The most important thing is to ensure that education is not interrupted.”

For schools with severe damage, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) and the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education have set up tents as temporary classrooms and provided the necessary equipment.

Though repairs are ongoing, he stated that learning activities have resumed in almost all affected areas.

He added that the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education is responsible for coordinating the rebuilding of regular schools, while the Ministry of Religious Affairs is responsible for collecting data related to Islamic schools.
