On the afternoon of the 2nd, a large-scale power outage occurred on Indonesia's tourist haven Bali, affecting local tourism, commercial activities, and public services to varying degrees.
The Bali branch of Indonesia's National Electricity Company pointed out that the cause of the incident was a malfunction in the submarine cable connecting Java and Bali, leading to the sudden large-scale power outage. At present, relevant departments are actively undergoing repairs, but some areas still have local power outages and equipment damage issues.
The authorities stated that priority is being given to ensuring the electricity needs of key infrastructure such as government agencies, hospitals, airports, and hotels.
A spokesperson for Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport stated that the airport experienced a sudden power outage at 4:30 PM, with power supply returning to normal at 5:12 PM. During this time, some flights experienced delays, but the overall operation was not majorly affected.
Indonesian media also reported that the tourist hub Nusa Dua was particularly severely affected, with restaurants, hotels, and malls temporarily crippled. Hotel guests were unable to use lighting, air conditioning, and elevators during the power outage; meanwhile, due to mobile network disruptions, tourists found it difficult to book transportation services through ride-hailing apps. Additionally, traffic lights being out of service caused traffic chaos in many areas.
Bali is Indonesia's famous tourist destination, attracting 6.3 million foreign visitors in 2024 according to statistics.
