Mother Dies After Being Engulfed in Flames While Roasting Marshmallows for Her Children

A 38-year-old mother in Sydney, Australia set up a barbecue grill in her backyard to roast marshmallows with her children during the school winter holidays. Unexpectedly, her clothes caught fire, and she suffered severe burns over her entire body. After surgery, she initially recovered well and even spoke with her two children over the phone. The family thought she was out of danger, but she tragically passed away in the hospital due to medical complications, leaving behind an 11-year-old son and a 7-year-old daughter, causing much grief among her family.

According to reports from People and Australian news outlet News.com.au and other foreign media, the deceased is 38-year-old Charlotte Rose-Anne Hill. On the day of the incident, she was setting up the barbecue in the yard when her clothes suddenly caught fire, and the blaze quickly engulfed her.

Her 7-year-old daughter Billie-Rose witnessed her mother engulfed in flames, screamed in terror, and tried to get the attention of her father, who was about to leave for work, hoping he would come and help.

The 11-year-old son, Noah, remained calm and immediately took off his jacket, rushed to his mother, and kept patting the flames to help put them out. Husband Matt Tierney hurried over upon hearing the commotion, performed first aid on his wife, and rushed her to the hospital.

The deceased’s cousin Bianca Hill said the two children showed remarkable bravery beyond their years in a crisis. Although witnessing their mother severely burned is a tremendous psychological trauma, the siblings respectively called for help and assisted in the rescue, making the family both heartbroken and proud.

Due to severe burns on her face and hands, Charlotte was later transferred to a specialized burns hospital for further treatment. Bianca accompanied her during the transfer and recalled that although Charlotte was in excruciating pain, she still tried to remain optimistic.

Bianca revealed that the two of them could even joke with each other in the ambulance, and Charlotte once managed a smile—marking their final moments together. Bianca reflected, ‘I am grateful I could be there with her, but I never expected that would be the last time.’

After surgery, Charlotte’s condition once looked promising. She was conscious and able to speak to her children over the phone. The family believed she was gradually recovering and hoped she would return home safely.

Yet, just as hope was reignited for the family, medical staff suddenly discovered that she had lost consciousness due to a medical complication. Despite all rescue efforts, she was pronounced dead on July 10.

Bianca admitted that receiving the call with the tragic news was the hardest phone call she had ever taken. She said sadly: ‘We’ll never hear her laughter again. Most heartbreakingly, her two children have lost their mother forever.’
