Former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi posted on social media, stating that President Trump's decision to refuse Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te’s transit through the United States sends a dangerous signal.
On the 29th, Pelosi posted on Facebook, saying that Trump's actions make it seem as if the U.S. can be bullied and become silent and docile when handling the Taiwan issue.
Pelosi said that for decades, bipartisan members of the U.S. House and Senate have upheld cross-party support for Taiwan's democracy in accordance with the Taiwan Relations Act. “Our relationship with Taiwan aligns with global and regional security interests, secures our economic interests through trade activities across the Taiwan Strait, and fulfills our moral interests by supporting democracy against authoritarianism.”
Pelosi pointed out that the Trump administration’s blocking of Taiwan's democratically elected President Lai Ching-te from transiting through New York allows China's President Xi Jinping to once again claim victories in terms of values, security, and economics. She hopes President Trump's refusal to let Lai Ching-te transit through New York does not mark a dangerous shift in U.S. Taiwan policy.
After Beijing made its objections to Washington, the U.S. government refused to grant approval for Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te to transit through New York on his way to Central America. The UK’s Financial Times quoted sources on Tuesday, reporting that the U.S. informed Lai Ching-te that he could not transit through New York on his way to visit Central and South America.
Taiwan's Presidential Office reported on the 28th that considering post-disaster recovery in southern Taiwan, reciprocal tariffs with the U.S., as well as the regional situation, President Lai Ching-te currently has no overseas travel plans.
Sources said that Lai Ching-te decided to cancel his overseas trip after learning that the United States would not allow him to transit through New York.
