Disaster on Indonesia’s Sumatra Island Has Claimed 303 Lives

(Indonesia, 30th) The floods and landslides that struck Indonesia’s Sumatra Island this week have resulted in 303 deaths and 279 missing persons.

According to comprehensive reports from Reuters and Xinhua News Agency, Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency chief Suharyanto said on Saturday (November 29) that although about 80,000 people have been evacuated, hundreds still remain stranded in three provinces on Sumatra Island, with at least 279 missing.

North Sumatra Province has been the hardest hit, with 166 deaths and 143 missing. Rescue workers are using helicopters to deliver supplies to the region. 

In addition, West Sumatra Province has reported 90 deaths and 85 missing; Aceh Province, 47 deaths and 51 missing.

Suharyanto has called for accelerated rescue efforts, focusing on searching for the missing, restoring damaged communications, and distributing relief supplies to affected people.
In Thailand, as of Saturday, the death toll from flooding in southern Thailand has risen to 162.
