(Bandar Seri Begawan, 9th) The Brunei Taiwan Alumni Association held its Lunar New Year gathering and Scholarship Awards Ceremony for members' children last night at the CentrePoint Hotel. The atmosphere was warm and lively, with numerous alumni and their families attending together, jointly witnessing the growth and achievements of the next generation.
The event’s Preparatory Committee Chairman and Vice President of the Brunei Taiwan Alumni Association, Mr. Chen Furong, delivered an opening address, extending Lunar New Year blessings to the guests, wishing everyone a safe and smooth year and family well-being.
Vice President Chen warmly welcomed the distinguished guests in attendance, including Mr. and Mrs. Hsiao Sheng-Chung, Representative of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in Brunei, along with representative office staff, Overseas Compatriot Affairs Commissioner Zhuang Xishan, President of the Brunei Taiwan Chamber of Commerce Wu Jiaxin, partners from the Chamber, and more.
Vice President Chen gave a special welcome to guests who traveled a long way, including senior alumni representatives from Sabah and Miri, Malaysia, who specially attended the event. This further enhanced the atmosphere of friendship and demonstrated the strong alum connections that transcend geographic boundaries.
Vice President Chen noted that as the event coincided with the Ramadan fasting month, it was specially scheduled in the evening. Although the format changed, the enthusiasm and camaraderie of gathering together were undiminished, making the occasion all the more valuable and precious.
Next, Association President Luo Wanyi delivered a speech, sincerely wishing all guests good health and success in all things. Though brief, his words were heartfelt and powerful.
President Luo, on behalf of all the directors and supervisors, expressed gratitude to all guests who supported and participated in the event. He emphasized that the successful organization of this Lunar New Year gathering relied on the unity and dedication of the team as well as the enthusiastic support from all sectors.
Amidst enthusiastic applause and encouragement, President Luo, together with the entire board, extended greetings to the guests, showcasing their collective efforts and achievements in organizing the event, thus kicking off the heartwarming and lively festivities.
Representative Hsiao Sheng-Chung from the Brunei office was invited to attend and offered congratulations and encouragement to the alumni and award-winning students.
In his speech, Representative Hsiao said that the Taiwan Alumni Association is not only a continuation of university friendships but also demonstrates the profound power of intergenerational inheritance—evolving from former overseas students to now cultivating the next generation, allowing the friendship between Taiwan and Brunei to endure.
Many alumni chose to study in Taiwan in the past, living, learning, and growing there, leaving behind precious lifelong memories. Taiwan is not just a place for studies, but also a pivotal stage for youth and professional development. This friendship has become the most precious and heartwarming bond between Taiwan and Brunei.
Representative Hsiao further affirmed the Brunei Taiwan Alumni Association’s long-standing efforts to foster alumni connections and promote exchanges and cooperation. It has gradually become an important civil force in deepening Taiwan-Brunei bilateral interaction. Taiwan alumni, well acquainted with Taiwan and rooted in Brunei society, continue to exert influence in education, commerce, industry, service sectors, and the public sector, making ongoing contributions to bilateral understanding and cooperation.
Since the mutual visa exemption between Taiwan and Brunei was implemented in June 2025, exchanges between the two sides have become more convenient, which not only promotes business interaction but also stimulates tourism and educational exchange.
Representative Hsiao warmly welcomed alumni to often revisit Taiwan to relive their campus memories and experience the ongoing progress and diverse development in Taiwan firsthand. He also encouraged the next generation to pursue exchanges and further studies in Taiwan, ensuring the continuity of this cherished bond.
Amidst the continuing trend of regional economic integration, Representative Hsiao stated that Taiwan is actively seeking to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). Taiwan has a high-standard international economic system and a complete industrial chain; joining will help enhance the resilience of regional supply chains and bring more mutually beneficial opportunities to the region. He hopes alumni will help share Taiwan's efforts and values at suitable occasions and enable more Bruneian friends to understand Taiwan’s contributions to regional development.
Lastly, Representative Hsiao encouraged the award-winning students and young friends to inherit the spirit of hard work from their parents, to bravely pursue their dreams, continue their quest for excellence on the road ahead, and become the new bridge of friendship between Taiwan and Brunei.
