Mexican Security Minister Afuchi stated on the 23rd that after the leader of the “Jalisco New Generation” cartel was killed during a military arrest operation, the cartel launched retaliatory attacks in multiple locations, resulting in the deaths of 27 security personnel.
At a press conference, he said the government recorded a total of 27 attacks targeting law enforcement agencies. Among these, six attacks occurred in Jalisco state, causing the deaths of 25 members of the National Guard, a prison guard, and a state prosecutor's office staff member.
He stated that 30 members affiliated with organized crime groups were killed in the related clashes. The Mexican federal government has deployed additional security forces to Jalisco state and established a national-level command and coordination center to address the situation.
“Jalisco New Generation” is one of Mexico’s major drug trafficking organizations. The group’s leader, Nesevantes, was killed by the Mexican military on the 22nd, after which riots broke out in Jalisco and neighboring states. Cartel members set vehicles on fire to block roads and arsoned commercial facilities. Several states announced school closures on the 23rd.
Mexican President Sheinbaum stated earlier on the 23rd that the roadblocks set up in response to the riots had been largely cleared that day and that the domestic situation was trending towards calm.
