Datuk Sebastian Ting Inspects Erosion Situation at Lutong Beach Road

(Miri, 4th) The area around Lutong Beach Road has been experiencing exacerbated coastal erosion and sea level rise due to climate change. Following the completion of the temporary protective stone embankment project, it effectively resisted the wave attacks this morning at a high tide level of 1.9 meters, preventing seawater from invading the road again.

Deputy Minister of Tourism, Datuk Sebastian Ting , is highly concerned about the coastal erosion issue along Lutong Beach Road. He personally visited the site at 12 noon today to ensure that the temporary protective stone embankment built by a private company is functioning as expected, providing crucial protection to coastal residents.

He emphasized that before the government officially launches a long-term flood control project, they will continue to monitor the changes in the coastline to ensure the temporary facilities remain in good condition and will continue discussions with Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah on this matter.

He mentioned that the RM45 million flood control project approved in 2022 has completed the tender, and they will continue to follow up in hopes that the project can start soon to reduce the threat of floods and coastal erosion in the coastal areas of Lutong and protect the safety of nearby residents and infrastructure.

Also, as the Piasau constituency member,Datuk Sebastian Ting pointed out through his personal Facebook page that on-site inspection showed that the waves were still strong this morning, and the challenges faced by the Lutong coast persist. Therefore, they must not be complacent and must expedite the promotion of long-term disaster prevention construction.

He praised the temporary protective stone embankment built by Shin Yang Corporation, through corporate social responsibility efforts. Observations from the site showed that even though the tide rose as high as 1.9 meters, the protective stone embankment successfully prevented seawater and waves from coming ashore, playing a certain protective role.

"From today's observations, strong waves surged, and if the temporary stone embankment project had not been completed, seawater might have invaded the road again, posing a threat to public safety."

However, he added that these are merely temporary responses. Only by rapidly initiating permanent protection projects can the issue be fundamentally resolved.
