After the US imposed additional tariffs on China, under the countermeasures of equal retaliation by China, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of China issued an alert on the night of the 9th, stating that due to the recent deterioration of Sino-US economic and trade relations and the "domestic security situation in the US", the ministry advises Chinese tourists to "fully assess the risks of traveling to the US and exercise caution when going there."

After China's "Foreign Relations Law" and the revised "Anti-Espionage Law" took effect on July 1, 2023, the US government immediately classified China as a Level 3 travel alert area, advising US citizens to "reconsider going there," only second to the highest level of "do not travel," in order to avoid the risk of arbitrary law enforcement, exit bans, and wrongful detention by Chinese authorities.

The content of the travel alert issued by the US points out that the Chinese government "arbitrarily enforces local laws, including issuing exit bans to US and other foreign citizens without executing fair and transparent procedures according to the law." "US citizens traveling or residing in China may be detained and unable to access US consular services or information related to alleged crimes."
