Philippine Population Surpasses 100 Million, Sets New Record High: Official Census Shows Total Reaches 112.72 Million

(Manila, 17th) – Philippine President Marcos Jr. has officially announced the results of the 2024 population census, showing that as of July 1, 2024, the national population has reached 112,729,484, an increase of about 3.69 million compared to the 2020 census figure of 109.04 million.

On the 11th of this month, Marcos Jr. signed Proclamation No. 973, instructing the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) to coordinate with the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) and to release population data classified by province, city/municipality, and village-level administrative units, for use and reference by government agencies at all levels.

According to data released by the Statistics Authority, this census was conducted from July to September 2024, covering all 18 administrative regions nationwide and including Filipino citizens in embassies, consulates, and other overseas offices.

Population Growth Rate Significantly Slows
Although the total population continues to rise, the average annual growth rate has declined to 0.80%, a significant drop from the 1.63% during the 2015 to 2020 period. The Statistics Authority noted that the slowed growth may be related to lower fertility rates, a rise in mortality rates during the pandemic, and a decrease in migration figures.

This population census was conducted in accordance with Administrative Order No. 87, as a statutory mid-term census, and July 2024 has also been designated by the government as the “National Population and Community Monitoring System Month.”

The data from this census will provide critical input for national policy making in areas such as education, health, housing, and infrastructure.
