(Singapore, 16th) The Singapore-registered container ship "Wang Chun Lun" caught fire off the coast of India, without causing fuel pollution on the sea surface.
Taiwanese shipping company Wan Hai Lines, which owns the burning vessel, issued a statement on Sunday (June 15) evening, stating that according to on-site reports and preliminary assessments from relevant authorities, the incident did not lead to fuel pollution on the sea surface.
The statement also said that the ship is currently being towed to the western sea area away from the Indian coast to protect India's coastal marine and fishery resources.
The company will continue to work with India's maritime authorities, rescue service companies, and insurance companies to search for the four missing crew members, ensure the safety of the cargo, and carry out other related work.
The "Wang Chun Lun" has 22 foreign crew members, of whom 18 have been rescued. The missing four are two Taiwanese, one Indonesian, and one Burmese. The search and rescue operation is still ongoing, and the shipping company has contacted the families of the missing crew members and provided necessary assistance.
The statement said that after the incident, the ship's captain discussed with the Indian Navy and relevant authorities, and instructed the crew to abandon ship according to international maritime regulations to ensure personal safety. The evacuated crew members have been properly accommodated and have received necessary medical and follow-up care.
This container ship caught fire at 12:30 PM on June 9th, approximately 80 kilometers southwest of Azhikkal, Kerala, India.
According to Indian media reports, the "Wang Chun Lun" was loaded with flammable and explosive materials and toxic substances, and was tilting after the incident, with some containers having fallen into the sea. Among the injured, two are in critical condition, with 30% to 40% of their bodies burned.
