Short-term Efforts for Russia-Ukraine Ceasefire: Trump Says It's Quite Difficult

Published at Jun 06, 2025 11:16 am
U.S. President Trump said on the 5th at the White House, while meeting with visiting German Chancellor Mertz, that it is quite difficult to achieve an immediate ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in a short period of time.

During the meeting, Trump repeatedly emphasized that the current grievances and hostilities between the Russian and Ukrainian sides are deep, and the Russian side has explicitly stated that it will launch a strong counterattack on Ukraine's attack on the Russian strategic air force base, therefore making it quite difficult to achieve an immediate ceasefire between the two sides in a short period.

Trump also compared himself to a referee in a hockey game, who will let the players fight for a while before intervening when a brawl occurs on the field.

Regarding whether new sanctions against Russia will be imposed, or whether he supports the passing of a new U.S. sanctions bill against Russia, Trump did not make a clear statement.

He only indicated that he would discuss the issue with Mertz and hinted that there would be no actions in the near future.

However, Trump also hinted that he might impose sanctions on both Russia and Ukraine, because "it takes two to tango," "when I see things not stopping, we will be very tough, and it might be so on both countries."
