As Shi Nansheng’s legendary life reaches its close, her decades-long emotional entanglement with famed director Tsui Hark has once again become a focus for the public. The two were once recognized as the "Condor Heroes Couple" of the film industry, jointly creating film classics like A Better Tomorrow and A Chinese Ghost Story. However, Tsui’s brilliance came with endless rumors, which ultimately led to the breakdown of their marriage. Yet, faced with her husband’s betrayal and the involvement of a third party, Shi Nansheng constantly demonstrated high emotional intelligence and magnanimity, choosing to end their marriage gracefully and without any harsh words. She has been praised as “the last heroine.”

Fifteen years ago, during the filming of Flying Swords of Dragon Gate, Tsui Hark was rumored to have met a woman online named “Lele,” who is 33 years his junior, and the two soon began a May-December romance. Tsui Hark even hired her as his personal assistant, putting Shi Nansheng in an awkward position. Amidst widespread rumors of betrayal, Shi Nansheng neither made a scene nor sought revenge as the original spouse. Instead, three years later, she calmly announced to the public that the two had divorced. When pressed by the media for the reason, she only replied lightly, “It’s a matter between two people and has nothing to do with a third person.” With wisdom and dignity, she drew a full stop to this relationship. Subsequently, there were rumors that Lele became pregnant, and Tsui Hark was reported to have become a father the year before last.
Even though they did not get to remain lifelong partners, Shi Nansheng and Tsui Hark did not become enemies after the divorce. Instead, they transformed their love into an unbreakable partnership. Shi Nansheng once sentimentally remarked: “Among all the glories in my life, what I am most proud of is being ‘Tsui Hark’s woman.’” Tsui Hark also publicly held her in high esteem, saying, “She’s optimistic, visionary, and completely changed my imagination of women.”
In the ten years since their divorce, Shi Nansheng has unwaveringly supported Tsui Hark’s career. She continued serving as producer for his films such as the Detective Dee series and The Taking of Tiger Mountain, personally inviting stars and working tirelessly behind the scenes to safeguard her ex-husband’s cinematic dreams. Last year, the two jointly won the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 43rd Hong Kong Film Awards.#
