U.S. Exaggerates Huawei's AI Chip Achievements, Ren Zhengfei: Still One Generation Behind

Huawei CEO Ren Zhengfei stated in an interview with Chinese state media that the U.S. has exaggerated Huawei's achievements in artificial intelligence (AI) chips, and said that Huawei's single chips are still one generation behind the U.S.

The interview with Ren Zhengfei was published by the Communist Party's official newspaper, the People's Daily, on the 10th.

In response to warnings about the risks of using Ascend chips and the impact on Huawei, Ren said during an interview at Huawei's Shenzhen headquarters that there are many companies in China making chips, and many are doing well, with Huawei being one of them.

However, he also believes that the U.S. has exaggerated Huawei's achievements, and that Huawei is not yet that advanced, requiring hard work to reach their evaluation.

Ren Zhengfei believes that Huawei's single chips are still one generation behind the U.S., "We use mathematics to supplement physics, non-Moore to supplement Moore, and group computing to supplement single chips, achieving practical results."

The U.S. has increased its efforts to curb Chinese technological progress, with the Department of Commerce issuing guidelines on May 13 stating that using Huawei's Ascend AI chips anywhere in the world would violate export control regulations.

Speaking on the future prospects of artificial intelligence, Ren Zhengfei said AI might be the last technological revolution for human society, although nuclear fusion for energy might also occur. The development of AI will take decades or even centuries, but China has many advantages.

Ren Zhengfei highlighted China's advantages by saying that hundreds of millions of young people are China's future. The key to AI in terms of technology is adequate electricity and a developed information network. China's electricity generation and grid transmission are excellent, and its communication network is the most advanced in the world, enabling the ideal of east-to-west data computation.
