(Mandalay, 6th, Comprehensive Report) Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, Acting President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and Chairman of the State Administration Council, attended the grand opening ceremony of the Mandalay University centenary celebration yesterday morning. He called on all higher education institutions nationwide to actively engage in scientific research and innovation, nurture talents with international competitiveness, and contribute to national development.
The ceremony was solemnly held at the Mandalay University Auditorium. Council Secretary and Deputy Commander-in-Chief Lt. Gen. Ye Win Oo, Council Member Lt. Gen. Biyay, Minister of the President’s Office Tin Aung San, Minister of Education Dr. Zaw Zaw Aung, and Mandalay Region Chief Minister Myo Aung jointly cut the ribbon to inaugurate the celebration.
Senior General Min Aung Hlaing then poured fragrant water on the unveiling monument in commemoration of the anniversary, visited the newly renovated main teaching building, the photo exhibition of former presidents and outstanding alumni, and enjoyed the students' choral performance of the centenary theme song "Ode to Mandalay University Centennial."
In his speech, he remarked that Mandalay University is a symbolically significant institution in Myanmar’s educational history. Over the past century, it has graduated nearly 120,000 students at various levels, including 2,960 PhDs, over 10,000 masters and bachelors, with many alumni having become pillars in various fields of the nation.
Min Aung Hlaing emphasized that universities should not only be a cradle for high-quality human resources, but also serve as centers for technological innovation and research. He pointed out that merely teaching humanities, sciences, and modern subjects is insufficient; universities must treat research as their “lifeline” and strengthen library resources and academic research to enhance the quality of teaching and learning.
He stated that as the country continues to promote the development of agriculture, animal husbandry, and industry, universities and colleges bear the important mission of training professional talent. He also stressed that the development of education relies on social peace and stability—only in a peaceful environment can knowledge be passed down from generation to generation.
He called on all people to value education and political awareness, to build peace and patriotism with knowledge and skills, and to be committed to nurturing professional and research-based talents who can compete on the international stage.
Subsequently, a centenary commemorative video was played at the venue. The Minister of Education presented a souvenir to Senior General Min Aung Hlaing on behalf of the university. Students from Mandalay and Myitkyina Education Colleges performed choral shows; Senior General Min Aung Hlaing awarded cash prizes to encourage them, toured the centenary exhibition, and cordially interacted with participants.
In the evening, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing and his wife enjoyed a performance by the Mandalay "Myoma Band", bringing the centenary celebrations to a successful conclusion.
The theme of Mandalay University's Centennial Celebration is: "A Century of Excellence, Innovating for the Future". Related activities will also include a tribute ceremony for teachers, paper presentation meetings, and research exhibitions.
