(Bandar Seri Begawan, 28th) The Fire & Rescue Department hereby reports a significant increase in forest and grassland fire incidents during April 25-26, 2026, believed to be caused by the current nationwide extreme high-temperature weather.
On April 25, 2026, a total of 7 emergency calls regarding forest and grassland fires were received, with estimated wildfire areas reaching 30.6 hectares. Of these, the fire near Brunei Polytechnic University covered the largest area, about 28 hectares.
Meanwhile, on April 26, 2026, the number of emergency calls increased to 12, with an estimated wildfire area of 37.4 hectares. Among them, the Kampung Rimba RPN area recorded the largest wildfire, covering about 20 hectares. On that day, through the National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC), the Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF) mobilized water-carrying firefighting units to contain the flames from spreading to nearby residential areas.
Overall, in April 2026, the department recorded a total of 88 forest fires and 47 grassland fires. The following are statistics from January to April 2026:
Month Forest Fires Grassland Wildfires Total
Jan 0 3 3
Feb 1 2 3
Mar 36 29 65
Apr 88 47 135
From January to April 26, there were a total of 206 forest and grassland wildfires, with a burnt area of 415.548 hectares.
The Fire & Rescue Department attaches great importance to the rising number of fires and continues to deploy personnel and equipment to contain and extinguish the fires while ensuring public safety.
As a proactive measure, the Fire & Rescue Department has increased patrols in flammable high-risk areas (hotspots), including forest and agricultural zones. These patrols aim to detect and prevent fires early, and act quickly should any fires occur.
It also advises the public: Do not conduct open burning, always keep surrounding areas clean and free from dry grass, trash, and other flammable materials. If you discover a fire, please immediately call the emergency number 995 to report it.
The department will continue to work closely with the Royal Brunei Air Force, the Public Works Department, Forestry Department, National Disaster Management Centre, and the Royal Brunei Police Force and other relevant agencies to strengthen comprehensive and effective forest fire fighting and control actions.
Open burning not only risks uncontrollable fires, but also negatively affects public health and the environment.
Given the current hot and dry weather conditions, we sincerely hope the public will cooperate and pay close attention to this issue, joining together to prevent ongoing increases in forest and grassland fires.
