(Kuching, 26th) The Sarawak government has introduced a new measure called the 'One Month Rule' policy, ensuring that all approved development projects officially commence within one month after the issuance of the Letter of Award.
Deputy Premier of Sarawak and Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, stated that this move aims to address long-standing project delays, especially those caused by contractors failing to start work on time.
He said that strict implementation of this policy is essential to ensure that all departments and executing agencies can complete Sarawak's development goals as scheduled.
“We must rigorously enforce this because the Premier himself has instructed departments to ensure planning and implementation are carried out according to targets. Many road projects require urgent construction and upgrading, including in remote areas such as Murud. Therefore, these projects are handled by the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR), as there is confidence in our ability to execute efficiently and on time.”
He said this while attending a Sarawak JKR Betong Division tea gathering yesterday.
Douglas further explained that the state government also emphasizes the need to complete land acquisition procedures in advance to avoid delays in development projects, especially those involving rural road construction.
“Past experiences must serve as lessons to prevent the recurrence of 'abandoned projects' in the future.”
He added that the implementation of this policy also lays a solid foundation to ensure that all development projects under the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK-13) can be executed smoothly and efficiently.
In addition, he emphasized the importance of team spirit to ensure every development project is carried out efficiently, safely, and effectively, in line with the Department's motto—'We Build For You.'
Attendees included Sarawak JKR Director Datu Dr Cassidy Morris and Betong Division JKR Engineer Jason Ng Boon Tuan.
