(Macao, 14th) The Macao Legislative Council election was held on Sunday (September 14), with six groups consisting of 71 candidates competing for 14 directly elected seats. This is also the first Legislative Council election to be held after amendments to the Macao Electoral Law.
According to reports from RTHK, HK01, and Metro Radio, voting took place from 9am to 9pm. Legislative Council Chairman Ho Iat Seng said when voting in the morning that this was the first Legislative Council election since the electoral law was revised. The law now has a more comprehensive candidate qualification review mechanism, better implementing the principle of 'patriots governing Macao', which is of great significance to ensuring the successful and sustained implementation of the 'One Country, Two Systems' policy. He called on all eligible voters to actively vote and exercise their civic rights.
The Macao Legislative Council has a total of 33 seats, of which 14 are directly elected. In addition, there are seven appointed seats which will be filled by Macao Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng.
Before the 2021 Legislative Council election, members Au Kam San and Sulu Sou were disqualified. In this session, centrist lawmaker Lam U Tou was also disqualified on the grounds of not upholding the Basic Law and not being loyal to the Macao SAR.
