Myanmar Fruit and Vegetable Association Encourages Dried Coconut Shell Suppliers to Explore Korean Export Market

The Myanmar Fruit, Vegetable, and Floral Producers and Exporters Association (MFVP) recently issued a notice calling on coconut growers and dried coconut shell suppliers to actively contact the association to discuss matters related to exporting dried coconut shells to South Korea.

This initiative is part of a collaborative project between Myanmar and South Korea. According to the Myanmar Trade Promotion Organization, Myanmar is implementing the ‘Potential Product (Coconut) Value Chain’ project under the ‘ACEMES-ROK Fund’ framework from May 2023 to April 2024, aiming to enhance the added value of the coconut industry and offer practical coconut shell crafts training courses.

The course content covers craft processes such as selecting discarded coconut shells, drawing, coloring, decorating, polishing, grinding, and drying techniques. Participants also learn to use basic tools like drilling machines. In addition, the course imparts basic painting and design skills to enhance the artistic quality of products.

The training project teaches participants to make craft items such as altar lamps, keychains, shell lamps, earrings, and curtains. Some courses also include practical lamp installation operation. Those who complete the training receive a certificate of completion. From January 22 to 24, 2024, the project successfully held a three-day coconut shell craft exhibition and competition in Pathein city.

Coconuts have various uses in Myanmar, ranging from traditional food and religious ceremonies to significant roles in the cosmetics and Asian food industries. In recent years, the export market has gradually expanded to countries such as Bangladesh, China, and Thailand.

Fresh coconut water is considered a healthy beverage enriched with various nutrients such as vitamin C, potassium, iron, calcium, magnesium, B vitamins, amino acids, and copper. It is viewed as a drink that enhances immunity and combats aging. Nutritionists point out that the cytokinins it contains have anti-cancer effects and help improve dehydration symptoms and restore strength, while being a low-cholesterol natural drink.

In Myanmar, coconuts are mainly cultivated in the southern Rakhine, delta, and coastal regions, with varieties including tall, dwarf (locally known as ‘Watmalut’), and orange varieties (also known as ‘Royal Coconuts’). The fruit-bearing time varies from 3 to 10 years depending on the variety, with an average annual yield of 5,000 coconuts per acre.

Currently, the annual coconut production nationwide exceeds 400 million, with Ayeyarwady Province leading with over 130 million. As processing and export potential are increasingly enhanced, Myanmar's coconut industry is moving towards a more value-added development stage.
