Laos Joint Statement Supports Unification; Taiwan's MOFA: Encouraging Mainland Military Aggression Against Taiwan

Last week, Lao President Thongloun visited China at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping. After their talks, the two countries issued a joint statement in which Laos expressed support for China's unification efforts. In response, Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) criticized Laos's remarks as detached from reality and said they would encourage China's military aggression against Taiwan.

According to a statement published on the Taiwan MOFA website on Sunday, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a joint statement last Saturday on 'Building a New Era All-Weather China-Laos Community with a Shared Future,' which included 'support for all efforts made by China to achieve national reunification' and other statements demeaning Taiwan's sovereignty. The MOFA said these statements not only seriously distort the facts but also promote China’s military invasion of Taiwan and endanger regional peace and stability. The MOFA issued the strongest repudiation and condemnation.

The MOFA strongly condemned China for repeatedly using occasions with aligned countries to publish joint statements undermining Taiwan’s sovereignty and spreading disinformation.

The MOFA pointed out that despite Taiwan’s repeated clarifications and urgings, Laos has chosen to ignore the facts and cooperate unconditionally with China in suppressing Taiwan. Once again, the MOFA warned the Lao government that tolerating authoritarian expansion would trap the Lao people in a vicious cycle of prolonged political and economic coercion from China.

The MOFA emphasized, 'The Republic of China (Taiwan) is a sovereign and independent country, and the People’s Republic of China does not have jurisdiction over Taiwan.' This is an undeniable objective fact and the status quo in the Taiwan Strait. The MOFA once again called on the international community to seriously confront China’s attempts to rationalize authoritarian expansion and its long-term actions that harm the sovereign decision-making of other countries.

The MOFA also stated that Taiwan is willing to cooperate with all countries that support freedom, democracy, and human rights to jointly curb authoritarian expansion, firmly safeguard peace and security in the Taiwan Strait, and maintain freedom and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.

According to the joint statement released last Saturday on the website of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Laos reiterated its commitment to the One China principle, recognizing that there is only one China in the world, that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory, and that the government of the People’s Republic of China is the only legitimate government representing all of China.

Laos opposes any words or actions that undermine China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, opposes any form of 'Taiwan independence' separatist activities, opposes external forces interfering in China’s internal affairs or undermining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait under any pretext, and supports all efforts made by China to achieve national reunification.
