Royal Customs Department Sarawak Branch Uncovers Drug Smuggling

(Miri 11th) The Royal Malaysian Customs Department Sarawak Branch launched an operation at the Miri Airport in early March, successfully cracking down on a methamphetamine smuggling case. The seized drugs are estimated to be valued at nearly RM 335,180.

The person in charge, Norizan Yahya,, stated in a press release that this activity successfully demonstrated the Customs Department's ongoing commitment to implementing efficient and clean governance, combating smuggling crimes in Sarawak.

She said that at about 1 PM on March 5th of this year, a team from the Special Passenger Inspection Unit (UKPP) together with the Customs Department's Anti-Narcotics Division conducted an inspection on an unclaimed luggage that had arrived the previous day on a commercial flight from Kuala Lumpur.

“The inspection results found 10 transparent plastic packages suspected to contain methamphetamine, with a total weight of 10,138 grams.”

The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, under which, if convicted, the penalty can be the death sentence or life imprisonment, along with no less than 15 strokes of the cane.

Norizan Yahya, also called on the public to continue providing information about smuggling activities to ensure national security and well-being are always maintained.
