(Miri, 14th) Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak, pointed out that the WAK Miri Art Festival is not just a festive event, but a model of the cultural and creative vitality of Sarawak driven by the power of the people.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the "2025 Miri WAK Art Festival" last night, he said that the festival's content includes a variety of programs such as local artisans' exhibits, touring performances, visual exhibitions, and storytelling, fully reflecting the infinite potential of the people of Sarawak when guided by the right platforms and goals.
"Miri is not only a city with a rich oil history, but also a convergence point of diverse cultures, and is now gradually transforming into an important base for promoting community tourism development."
He urged the public to cherish and support this community-driven cultural celebration, and to jointly witness the blossoming of Miri's artistic energy.
He stated that the WAK Art Festival embodies the grassroots spirit, Sarawak's pristine culture, and the result of multi-faceted cooperation. He highly commended the efforts of the curatorial team, partner units, and all creative talents, and expressed pride in the successful establishment and growth of the art festival in Miri.
"The WAK Miri Art Festival 2025 is not just a continuation but a pioneering attempt. For the next three days, this friendly oil city will transform into a vibrant stage, showcasing music, drama, visual arts, traditional crafts, and cultural heritage."
He noted that the event is fully supported by the Sarawak Tourism Ministry and Miri City Council and is the best practice of the "community-based tourism model" promoted in Sarawak.
"The WAK Art Festival is the responsibility-oriented, culture-based tourism concept we advocate. It not only empowers local artistic talents but also strengthens community cohesion and sense of belonging."
He also welcomed all guests and tourists, encouraging them to actively participate in the various programs of the art festival, visit different exhibition venues, engage with artists, and experience the diverse cultural charm of Miri.
"Let us use this festival as a reminder that tourism is not just a journey to a destination, but a heart-touching encounter between people, stories, and cultures."
