US to Impose 35% Tariff on Canadian Goods Starting August 1

Published at Jul 11, 2025 02:21 pm
US President Trump announced on the 10th that, starting August 1, a 35% tariff will be imposed on goods imported from Canada.

He posted a letter addressed to Canadian Prime Minister Carney on the social media platform 'Truth Social,' criticizing Canada's retaliatory tariffs against previously imposed US tariffs.

He said: "Canada has not cooperated with the United States, but has instead taken retaliatory tariff measures."

In the letter, Trump wrote, "Starting August 1, 2025, we will levy a 35% tariff on Canadian goods entering the United States, separate from all sectoral tariffs."

He pointed out that if Canada takes retaliatory action, the US will raise tariffs further.

He stated that part of the reason for imposing the new tariffs is the flow of fentanyl from Canada into the US and 'unfair trade practices.' He added that if Canada cooperates with the US to block the inflow of fentanyl, he would consider adjusting the tariffs.

Plans to Impose 15% or 20% Tariffs on Other Countries

In addition, Trump said in an interview broadcast by NBC News on the 10th that other trading partners who have not yet received tariff notices may face a comprehensive tariff of 15% or 20%.

He said that not every (country or region) will receive a tariff notice.

He said: "We will directly announce the tariff rates that all other countries will have to pay, possibly 15% or 20%. We are working on this."
