New Guidelines for Muslims Participating in Non-Muslim Celebrations to Worsen Local Racial Divide

(Miri, 6th) The upcoming new guidelines by the government will severely affect racial divide, making it difficult for the citizens of our country to unite, and over time, religious and racial issues will become more severe. Sarawak United People's Party Youth Deputy Leader,Kelvin Hii, stated that all guidelines must be applicable nationwide, and the upcoming new guidelines are simply unsuitable, especially for Sarawak.

In recent years, racial and religious issues in our country have gradually worsened, and many issues revolve around these two topics. Malaysia is a country of diverse races and religions, and this feature is also recognized internationally. Many foreign tourists visiting our country can explore different racial and religious sites and experience many different cultures. If we do not cherish this inherent advantage, we will lose our uniqueness, leading to national division and deepened hatred.

Kelvin Hii stated that all citizens need to understand that the national religion of our country remains Islam, which cannot be changed. Meanwhile, our country is multireligious, and apart from the Muslim community, citizens can freely choose their religions, which cannot be changed either. Therefore, there needs to be basic respect and understanding among citizens to ensure that when people of different races and religions interact, they do not cross others' boundaries and can coexist harmoniously.

Events are the best opportunities for different racial and religious groups to interact. Citizens usually live within their circles and often only through events break out of their circles to communicate with others. If respect needs to be achieved through many regulations, it will affect the freedom of interaction between Muslims and non-Muslims. Some non-Muslims may even find it troublesome and choose to forgo inviting Muslims to events they originally could attend together.

Sarawak is a model place. In Sarawak, people live together regardless of race or religion. During festive seasons, they greet each other and visit homes. In restaurants, customers of different ethnic groups even enjoy meals together. Neighbors respect each other, and in the workplace, there is mutual understanding. As a result, regardless of race or religion, everyone can be very good friends. Many families even have members of different races and religions, who can still show tolerance and respect during family gatherings. If these new guidelines are inevitable, we only hope Sarawak remains the last pure land in the country, unaffected by these new guidelines in terms of community relations.

Kelvin Hii  hopes the government can re-evaluate these new guidelines. Citizen interaction should not be based on regulations or laws, but rather on fundamental education, so that respect and acceptance can be cultivated from a young age.
