Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto revealed that one of the key topics he discussed with Bill Gates during their meeting at Jakarta's Independence Palace was the trial work of the tuberculosis (TB) vaccine in Indonesia.

Bill Gates, through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, is funding research and clinical trials of a TB vaccine, which is currently in the testing stage in several countries.

"He is developing a TB vaccine for the world, and Indonesia has been chosen as one of the clinical trial locations. Tuberculosis causes almost 100,000 deaths annually in Indonesia," Prabowo stated in a statement on Wednesday.

He emphasized that the government is committed to reducing the tuberculosis mortality rate and is addressing this challenge through several initiatives, including free health screenings.

"Bill Gates has shown a strong commitment and continues to support us in combating tuberculosis, as well as supporting malaria vaccine development," the president said.

During the meeting, Gates confirmed that two locations in Indonesia have been designated as clinical trial sites for the TB vaccine.

He explained that these trials will help develop a vaccine suitable for countries with high TB incidence rates.

"We are conducting clinical trials in Africa, India, and here (Indonesia). We are very much looking forward to seeing the results," Gates stated.

He noted that TB prevention is one of the key focus areas of his foundation's work, which also includes the development of vaccines for pneumonia, human papillomavirus (HPV), malaria, and diarrhea.

Prabowo welcomed Gates at the Independence Palace at around 8 AM local time, and their meeting lasted about two hours.

Several Indonesian ministers attended the meeting, including Investment Minister Rosan Roeslani, Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin, Communications and Digital Minister Mutiah Hafid, Foreign Minister Sugiono, Secretary of State Prasetyo Hadi, and Cabinet Secretary Tedy Indraviaja.

Prabowo also introduced several well-known Indonesian entrepreneurs to Gates, including Chairul Tanjung, Haji Abdul Rasyid, Garibaldi Thohir, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, Bachtiar Karim, Arsjad Rasjid, Tommy Winata, James Riady, Anthony Salim, Dato' Sri Tahir, and Haji Abul Samad.
