Taiwanese singer Jay Chou truly lives up to his title as the “strongest money-making king in history.” Rumor has it that he officially joined the Chinese platform “Douyin” with a contract worth more than HKD 100 million (about RM54.11 million). Even before posting any content, his account attracted 5.16 million followers and further propelled shares of his related stock “Star Legend” to soar over twice its value, with gains reaching as high as 165%—an impressive surge.

Singer Jay Chou announced his official entry to the Chinese platform “Douyin.” His account shares the same name as his official 2D IP “Mr. Zhou” (“周同学”), and the profile picture also features the cartoon image of “Mr. Zhou.” This marks his second time joining a social media platform using this IP identity. Within less than 15 minutes of the account going public, he gained 50,000 new followers. As of 4pm yesterday, despite not having posted any content, he had already accumulated over 5.16 million followers.

Earlier, some Chinese media reported that Jay Chou’s contract with “Douyin” was as high as over HKD 100 million (about RM54.11 million); however, the relevant person in charge denied the “nine-digit” rumors, calling such reports false.

It is not yet known how much Jay Chou will earn from joining the mainland platform this time, but the concept stock “Star Legend (06683),” which is behind the IP, saw its shares soar. Stock prices peaked at HKD 17 (about RM9), up 165%. It closed the day at HKD 12.44 (about RM6.7), up 94.37%, with a total turnover of HKD 11.484 billion (about RM62 million).

Currently, the licensing scope of the “Mr. Zhou” IP covers five core sectors: fashion, cultural and creative products, 3C (computer, communication, and consumer electronics), food, and precious metals. Last year, collaborative product sales exceeded HKD 1 billion (about RM541 million).
