KUCHING, July 22: Cahya Mata Cement Sdn Bhd (Cahya Mata Cement), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Cahya Mata Sarawak Berhad (Cahya Mata), signed a contract with Sinoma Industry Engineering (M) Sdn Bhd to build a new 6,000-tonnes-per-day clinker line at its Mambong Integrated Plant in Kuching on Monday (July 21).

According to a press release, Sinoma Industry Engineering (M) Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Tianjin Cement Industry Design & Research Institute (TCDRI), China, has been appointed as the project’s Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Commissioning (EPCC) contractor.
The signing marks the official start of construction, following recent approval from the Sarawak Planning Authority (SPA), and signals a key milestone in Cahya Mata Cement’s growth strategy.

The RM673 million project, expected to take 21 months to complete, will more than double Cahya Mata Cement’s annual clinker capacity from 900,000 metric tonnes to 1.9 million metric tonnes, improving cost efficiency and eliminating the need for future clinker imports, which will significantly reduce the carbon footprint in Cahya Mata’s cement production.

“The Mambong Clinker Line 2 is a key step in strengthening Sarawak’s cement supply chain, boosting capacity, reducing import reliance, and ensuring we can meet future demand reliably,” said Dato Sri Sulaiman Abdul Rahman Taib, Group Managing Director of Cahya Mata.

“Beyond production, it reflects Cahya Mata’s commitment to building a modern facility that positions us as possibly the greenest cement producer in the region.”

The facility will feature state-of-the-art technologies to improve environmental performance and energy efficiency, including a waste heat recovery system capable of generating up to 6MW of power and an advanced dust filtration system designed to reduce dust emissions to more than half of the current regulatory limit.

Clinker Line 2 will also employ high-efficiency equipment to reduce energy use and carbon dioxide emissions, while incorporating locally sourced alternative raw materials and fuels to further limit reliance on fossil fuels.

At peak construction, the project will create up to 500 jobs and generate spillover benefits for local businesses, especially in the Padawan and Kuching areas.

With operations dating back to 1974, Cahya Mata Cement has played a long-standing role in supporting Sarawak’s construction development.

The company currently operates three cement grinding plants in Kuching and Bintulu, and distribution terminals in Sibu and Miri, supporting an integrated supply chain designed to meet the state’s evolving needs.

The signing ceremony took place at the company’s office in Menara Darussalam, Kuala Lumpur, with representatives from Cahya Mata Sarawak Berhad and Sinoma Industry Engineering (M) Sdn Bhd in attendance.
