The Thai government has given principle approval to build a fence in Narathiwat province near the Malaysian border, in order to prevent smuggling, illegal border crossings, and potential local unrest.

After concluding an inspection trip to Southern Thailand on the 18th, Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin stated that the border fence project is expected to cover Thailand’s southernmost Tabai and Waeng districts, aiming to prevent illegal border crossings, improve law enforcement efficiency, reduce social unrest, and boost local community confidence. The project will be funded from the central budget.

According to the Bangkok Post, the design details and planned route of the border fence will be finalized before construction begins. Funding for the first phase is expected to come from this year’s central budget, but no details were provided regarding when construction will start or the duration of the project.

On the 17th, Anutin personally inspected the southern border area of Thailand, aiming to restore public confidence in the local situation.

Anutin emphasized that political and military forces must work together to achieve lasting peace. Thailand must carry out intelligence-led operations and strictly enforce the law based on evidence of actions in order to bring offenders to justice.

In addition, government spokesperson Rachada said that combating drug-related crimes is a top priority for the Anutin administration. Although the number of drug dealers arrested along the southern border has increased, drug abuse remains worrying, especially among youth and young women.
