According to official data released on July 31, the Korean Peninsula is experiencing sustained high temperatures, with Seoul recording 22 consecutive days of tropical-like nighttime heat, breaking a century-long meteorological record in South Korea.

South Korean officials pointed out that in July, Seoul’s nighttime temperature has exceeded 25°C for 22 consecutive days, marking the longest stretch on record since modern meteorological records began in October 1907 with July nights exceeding 25°C.

In South Korea, such nights are called “tropical nights.”

The Korea Meteorological Administration indicated that Seoul’s scorching weather is expected to continue.

Yoon Ki-han, director of the Seoul Observatory, told AFP: “Warm air from the North Pacific high pressure system began affecting Korea earlier than usual. As this influence gradually increased, so did the accumulation of heat—like compound interest in a savings account, it slowly adds up over time.”

AFP analyzed data from the EU’s Copernicus Climate Change Service (CAMS) and found that many parts of the world are experiencing sweltering summer weather, with June being the hottest month on record for 12 countries.
