This year marks the 30th anniversary of Gigi Leung’s debut. Ever diligent in her career, she is once again embracing a new challenge by performing in Putonghua for the stage play We Became Her, taking on the classic role of 'Kim Ji-young.' Gigi shared: “I’ve taken part in stage plays before, but this genre is completely different from my previous experiences. The emotional expression required is a huge challenge. After several in-depth discussions with director Si To Fai-cheuk, I really fell in love with the script and the role. This is a production created for modern women.”
The creative team based the play on Kim Ji-young, Born 1982, recreating every authentic moment in a woman’s growth. It confronts the survival dilemmas faced by modern women, the exhaustion nobody speaks of, the cautious perseverance, and the yearning to be understood and seen—all will be presented one by one on stage.
For the performance, Gigi has already immersed herself in the spirit of Kim Ji-young, and said: “Kim Ji-young’s story is the epitome of many modern women who are facing the pressures from universal societal values and the struggle between career and family life. Some seemingly ordinary daily routines are, in fact, omnipresent pressures of life. When the film was released, I also went to see it and felt that the story was just too real, too heart-wrenching. I feel honored for the opportunity to perform in the stage adaptation.”
