SIBU,8 June : The ruai and tanju sections of all 34 longhouses within the Nangka state constituency are set to receive a facelift through an upgrading project, says Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee.
The Nangka assemblyman said the project would be carried out in stages based on the annual allocation available.
“We will carry it out gradually. In Nangka, there are 34 longhouses and I will try to refurbish the ruai and tanju sections of these longhouses little by little.
“This is because my allocation is only around RM5 million a year, so it has to be divided among the needs of the entire area (Nangka),” he said during the 2025 Gawai Ngabang Programme at Rumah Maxwell, Mile 13, Oya Road, today (June 9).
He added three longhouses in the area have yet to receive access to clean water due to their remote locations.
“I will also work on this in stages to ensure they receive the necessary facilities,” he said.
Commenting on the Gawai Dayak celebration, Dr Annuar noted that the festival reflects the harmony of Sarawak’s multiracial society.
“Gawai Dayak is not only celebrated by the Dayak community, but also by all races in Sarawak including the Chinese, Malays and Melanau. This is the uniqueness of Sarawak.
“We must preserve this spirit. We have lived together for decades, even centuries. This celebration is shared, and the harmony and cooperation among our multi-ethnic communities must never be compromised,” he said.
During the event, Dr Annuar also officiated the handing over of loudspeakers, an audio system and fire extinguishers to the residents of Rumah Maxwell.
