The Hong Kong MTR Corporation and China CRRC Group have joined forces to win the Sydney Metro contract in Australia.

According to reports from Hong Kong Wen Wei Po and Sing Tao Daily, MTR announced on the 5th that it has formed a joint venture company, Metro Trains West, with a subsidiary of China CRRC Corporation Limited (abbreviated as CRRC), which has successfully secured the main contract for the Sydney Metro West project in New South Wales, Australia.

Under the contract, the joint venture will be responsible for providing the next generation of metro trains and related systems, as well as the system commissioning and operation for the line, connecting major commercial and residential hubs in Western Sydney, including Parramatta, with the Sydney city center.

The Sydney Metro West line is an entirely new underground railway line, stretching 24 kilometers and featuring 9 stations. It is expected to commence service in 2032. The infrastructure for the line will be provided by the New South Wales government, while the joint venture Metro Trains West will be responsible for a range of tasks during the delivery phase, including supplying the new generation of driverless metro trains, signaling systems, communications and control systems, as well as system integration, testing, and commissioning, and will also be in charge of operation and maintenance after the line begins service.

MTR's Property and International Business Director, Tony Dang, said that as a world-leading railway operator, MTR possesses extensive experience in railway construction and professional operation. This time, by joining forces with CRRC, leveraging its technological strengths as a globally renowned supplier of rail vehicles, they will together provide world-class system and operational solutions for the line, connecting new communities via railways and propelling urban development.

CRRC Vice President Wang Feng said that CRRC will leverage its technology and experience in building world-leading driverless metro systems in China and overseas to create an advanced railway system for Sydney. Coupled with close cooperation with MTR, CRRC is confident in successfully delivering this project.
