(Kuala Lumpur, 12th) The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) takes seriously the incident reported by the media regarding the spread of a video of several Melaka students committing rape, and reminds the public not to disseminate the video to avoid interfering with investigation work and causing further harm to the victim.
The MCMC issued a statement saying that the authorities are working closely with the police and internet service providers to ensure any content that may interfere with the progress of the investigation or cause psychological trauma to the victim is swiftly removed from social media platforms.

The statement also reminds media practitioners that when reporting on the case, they must adhere to principles of ethics and responsibility, and avoid publishing inflammatory content that could affect the investigation or inflict secondary harm on the victim.
"We also remind media practitioners not to disclose any sensitive information that could lead to the victim’s identity being revealed, as this contravenes Section 15 of the Child Act 2001."
Additionally, the MCMC warns the public that anyone sharing or distributing videos containing pornographic or sexually exploitative content on online platforms is already in violation of Section 233 of the 1998 Communications and Multimedia Act, and will face legal penalties.

Earlier reports stated that four 17-year-old male students have been remanded for six days to assist in the investigation of their alleged involvement in the gang rape of a 15-year-old female student at a school in Alor Gajah, Melaka.
The incident occurred on October 2, during which two suspects used their mobile phones to record the crime.
The police have initiated an investigation under Section 375B of the Penal Code (gang rape).
