(US, 26th) US President Trump said that the United States will hold talks with Iran next week, but expressed doubts about the necessity of reaching a diplomatic agreement following US airstrikes on three major Iranian nuclear facilities.
Speaking at a press conference during the NATO summit in The Hague on Wednesday (June 25), Trump said: “We will have talks with the Iranians next week, maybe sign an agreement. I don’t know, in my view, it’s not absolutely necessary.”
Trump did not reveal at what level the talks would be held.
Bloomberg quoted Trump as saying that US airstrikes on the Natanz, Isfahan, and Fordow nuclear facilities “obliterated” those facilities, once again refuting US intelligence assessments that the airstrikes set Tehran’s nuclear program back only by a few months. He also indicated that the airstrikes essentially meant the conflict “was over.”
He repeatedly stressed that the US military’s attacks had completely destroyed Iran’s nuclear facilities, citing both the Israeli Atomic Energy Commission and Iranian official statements. He also believed that the US strike was so rapid and fierce that the Iranian side had no time to move nuclear material: “They’re very hard to move, and very dangerous, too.” He quoted people who had been on site as saying that everything was completely destroyed: “We believe everything related to nuclear stuff is down there.”
He said: “I’ve dealt with both sides. They’re both tired, both exhausted. They fought very, very intensely, very brutally, very violently, and both sides have gone home satisfied. Will conflict break out again? My guess is maybe it will one day. Maybe it will start again soon.”
