TELANG USAN, Aug 28: A prayer and blessing ceremony was held on Monday (Aug 25) to mark the commencement of the feasibility study for the proposed Cascading Power Source Project in Sungai Tutoh, jointly organised by Sarawak Energy and the Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication.
The ceremony was officiated by Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring) and Mulu assemblyman Datuk Gerawat Gala, together with Telang Usan assemblyman Dato Dennis Ngau.
In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news report, Gerawat expressed appreciation to Sarawak Energy and all stakeholders for their support of the high-impact project, which he said represents a major step towards securing sustainable and clean energy for Sarawak.
“This proposed project is not only a milestone in advancing renewable energy, but also an opportunity to stimulate economic growth and enhance the quality of life for local communities, in line with the government’s commitment to inclusive and sustainable rural development,” he said when addressing the ceremony.
He emphasised that the project must be implemented prudently, with thorough consultations with local residents to safeguard community welfare and environmental sustainability.
The project is expected to employ a phased hydropower approach involving the construction of small dams, designed to deliver long-term benefits without disrupting ecosystem balance.
Gerawat added that the prayer and blessing ceremony symbolised a positive beginning and the hope for divine blessings on the endeavour.
Also present were Telang Usan District officer Ezra Uda, Pemanca Hennesser Uning Bong representing the Penan community, and Pemanca Nawan Luhat representing the Kayan community, alongside local leaders and residents who came to show their support.
The strong turnout by community leaders and local residents reflected the spirit of unity in supporting the realisation of a sustainable energy project in Baram.
