Indonesian Agriculture Minister Sulaiman stated on the 5th that as of early May 2025, data shows that Indonesia's national rice reserves have reached 3.5173 million tons, marking the highest record for the same period in 57 years.
He is optimistic that within the next 15 to 20 days, Indonesia's rice reserves can exceed 4 million tons.
The data surpass the previous record of 2.4 million tons from May 1984 and 3.03 million tons from June 1997. Compared to 1.47 million tons in May 2024, the reserve has significantly increased.
Sulaiman pointed out at the press conference that this is the first time in 57 years that Indonesia's rice reserves have surpassed 3.5 million tons during the January to May period, all derived from domestic production. This is thanks to land intensification and the implementation of irrigation systems in Java, as well as the repair of irrigation facilities in regions outside Java.
With a population exceeding 280 million, the Indonesian government aims to achieve food self-sufficiency. Some agencies predict that Indonesia's annual rice output will reach 34.6 million tons, positioning the country to become the largest rice producer in Southeast Asia.
